Dedication is the act of consecrating an altar, temple, church, or other sacred building. You must surrender yourself, body, soul, and spirit into the hands of Jesus. You must present your time, talents, and property at the throne of Jesus, beg his acceptance of them, and beseech him to give you grace to hold them for him, look upon them as his, and use them for his glory. This act is usually accompanied by an announcement of what is being done or intended and by prayer asking for divine approval and blessing. Dedication can also be referred to as a form of sacrifice that you are giving back to God. The burnt sacrifice is the most important of all the sacrifices offered to God, because it expressed “dedication.” This sacrifice was wholly consumed (the skin excepted), which was not the case in any other offering, and is also described as the “whole burnt offering.” The offerings were graded in value so that even the poorest worshippers who were conscious of their spiritual need might find access to God by coming in complete devotion. Dedication is a way of honoring God. Honoring God requires a decision and appropriate direction to take, so it must result in a determination to act. In the midst of a thriving personal relationship with the Lord, Solomon acted on his desire to honor God. 1 Kings 6:14-38 offers a concise summary of the seven-year building project Solomon undertook to complete the temple, and 1kings 7:13-50 details the furnishings crafted to serve in the active worship of God in the temple. In addition, Solomon honored the Lord with personal gifts from the king's storehouse of treasure (1 Kings 7:51). These treasures included the booty and tribute collected by his father, King David (2 Samuel 8:9-12), all items that had been dedicated to the Lord and now were presented at his temple. The wise king demonstrated a generous spirit in his actions. In his inspired writings, he also challenges us to do likewise. Proverbs 3:9 reminds us, "Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops." Surely giving joyfully and sacrificially is one first step in our acts to honor God, a step that will be accompanied by many more to the glory of God. Dedication was done where there was an alter of God. And the chiefs offered offerings for the dedication of the altar on the day it was anointed; and the chiefs offered their offering before the altar.(Numbers 7:1-11).
