Redeemed Gospel Church-Thika TownAt the most basic level, a leader is someone who leads other. But what makes someone a leader? What is it about being a leader that some people understand and use to their advantage? What can you do to be a leader? A great leader has ability of restoring the strength of focus and flying above all the kind of storms that may come along his/her way. In Isaiah 40:31 (KJV) it reads: "But they that wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint."

Qualities of a leader

A great leader is a person who lives up to his/her commitment. Commitment is the foundation of becoming a good follower. A great number of people called themselves Christians who want to be served than to serve. There are many who aspire in leadership but very few will aspire to servant-hood. Most of the people are aspiring to become leaders and not followers. Commitment in serving the Lord found in Luke 9:57-62; “And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow you wherever you go. And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man has no place to lay his head. And he said to another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, first let me go and bury my father. Jesus said to him, Let the dead bury their dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God. And another also said, Lord, I will follow you; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. And Jesus said to him, No man, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” Secondly, a great leader should be in a position to make things happen. A leader has a vision. Leaders see a problem that needs to be fixed or a goal that needs to be achieved. It may be something that no one else sees or simply something that no one else wants to tackle. Whatever it is, it is the focus of the leader's attention and they attack it with a single-minded determination. In Romans 8:28(NLT) it reads: “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” A great leader should also influence the opinion of others, influencing the opinion of others members is a way of showing them that you have confidence in their abilities which will in turn improve their morale and faith in their own skills. One of your duties as a leader is to help people grow and improve their performance, allowing them to surpass your expectations, which is why influencing other members’ opinion is critical if you want to be effective.

In exodus 18:25-27(KJV)it serves as a good example showing how Moses chose some men out of Israel and made them heads over the people; people who even judged the other people at all seasons. A great leader should be a value adder to the other people. As a leader, you should choose the values and the ethics that are most important to you, the values and ethics you believe in and that define your character. Then live them visibly every day at work. Living your values is one of the most powerful tools available to you to help you lead and influence others. Don't waste your best opportunity. If you want to lead successfully for an extended period of time you definitely must provide ideas to the others in a positive attitude. A positive attitude leads to positive activity. Especially for leaders, it is important to have a positive mindset. People will emulate their leaders. If leaders expect positive outcomes and behave in such a way that reflects those beliefs, followers will follow suit. I agree, you don’t have to have a positive attitude to lead. But you do if you want to lead in a positive direction. A positive attitude helps you cope more easily with the daily affairs of life. It brings optimism into your life, and makes it easier to avoid worries and negative thinking. If you adopt it as a way of life, it will bring constructive changes into your life, and makes them happier, brighter and more successful. With a positive attitude you see the bright side of life, become optimistic, and expect the best to happen. It is certainly a state of mind that is well worth developing. A positive attitude leads to happiness and success and can change your whole life. If you look at the bright side of life, your whole life becomes filled with light. This light affects not only you, and the way you look at the world, but it also affects your whole environment and the people around you. If it is strong enough, it becomes contagious. Biblically our attitude should be respectful, faithful, cooperative, helpful, willingness, dependable, participating, and encouraging. (1 Cor. 10:32, 1 Cor. 14:12, Heb. 2:12). Good leaders draw others to themselves; the best leader will inspire his followers. He will lead, yet people will not feel that they are being led. If you direct people through issuing directives, you will come up against opposition and resistance. The most effective leadership is to help others feel they are working from their own initiative. To inspire your fellow workers in this way, it is necessary to lead by example and offer encouragement where appropriate. Jesus leads by an example when He fed a great multitude with only five barley cakes and two fish on the eastern side of the Sea of Galilee. (John 6:10). A good leader will also train others how to fly.As a leader you have responsibility of training the others on how to be effective. Flying in our case is going to the other level. Since we have different capabilities and talents, one as a leader should train the others how to do the right things instead of the wrong ones. Right things means, doing the Christianity deeds that usually impresses our Lord. The bible states that one should give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning (Proverbs 9:9). Last but not the least, a leader sees and seizes opportunity. To seize an opportunity is to possess oneself of something. Once you come across an opportunity as a leader you should make efforts and show some commitment so that you can achieve what you want.
